Preface
Living along Wuhan East Lake and the Yangtze River, Song Bin has been enthusiastic about seal cutting art since his childhood inspired by the profound Chu culture. With his natural talent, he builds a solid foundation with exquisite techniques guided by the famous artists. He continuously cultivates his skills and pursues higher artistic standards. Such efforts have never stopped even in the Cultural Revolution, in his military service, in his study at Wuhan University and Phd studies at Huazhong university of Science & Technology, as well as 30 years of teaching at China University of Geosciences.
In Guang Yi Zhou Shuang Ji, Kang Youwei proposed to create own unique style through the long-term practices, while adhering to the tradition. Song Bin has studied oracle bone and bronze inscriptions in the Shang Dynasty, seals in the Qin and Han Dynasties and calligraphy styles in Ming and Qing Dynasties for many years. He is proficient in seal cutting, composition art, and cutting methods. He creates the natural and forceful style of Water Stains on the Wall by the straight Tiexianzhuan (a seal script) style. He is skillful in Guangeti (an academic regular script in ancient Chinese imperial examinations) style and portrait seals. He creates double-shape zodiac seal, leading in creative seal cutting, as well as the design and computerization of seal cutting. Inspired from Changming Master, one of top ten eminent monks in China, Song Bin forms his distinctive, vigorous and graceful style in Buddha figure seal cutting.
Art is more than seal cutting. The true art is cultivated and accumulated from extensive life experience and long-term practices. Apart from hardworking, Song Bin travels around China and abroad to broaden his artistic vision. It is surely no accident that his works are well received by Chinese and overseas audiences.
Song Bin is young and vigorous. He will continue climbing new peak in his artistic life. We firmly believe that he will make more achievements.
